Kevin Cone Talks GT and First NFL Action

cone.jpgFormer Georgia Tech wide receiver Kevin Cone “got the call” this past week.

Cone, who has been on the Falcons practice squad all season, was activated for the Tampa Bay game this past Sunday and in addition to playing special teams took snaps in the Falcons offense.

Heady stuff for a guy who didn’t play much at Georgia Tech until his senior season and who only started a few collegiate games.

Cone was all smiles as he talked about his performance in the locker room after the game. But his mood turned somber when asked about the Georgia Tech loss to Utah in the Sun Bowl.

"That was a tough one, you know," Cone said.  "We were up and they fought back.  I thought my boys played hard but a play here and a play there and we would have had it."

We invite you to subscribe to GTSportsTalk Gold to hear Kevin in his own words.

Falcons DT Vance Walker Talks Saints

While the Yellow Jackets prepare for the Sun Bowl, former GT defensive tackle Vance Walker continues to take care of his business with the Falcons.

Last time out Atlanta jumped on Jacksonville early and cruised to a 41-14 victory.  The Falcons now prepare for their biggest rival, the New Orleans Saints in a Monday game the night after Christmas.

When asked about the upcoming Saints game, Walker made a stunning observation.

“We always look forward to playing those guys,” Walker said.  “It is always a close and personal game.  They know us and we know them and it is really, I’d say it is bigger than the Georgia/Georgia Tech rivalry.”

Many avid Georgia Tech and UGA fans may dispute that mindset, but who would know better than a guy who has played multiple games in both rivalries like Vance Walker?

Of course, Vance is originally from South Carolina, so…

Daryl Smith - Former GT Linebacker

Former Georgia Tech linebacker Daryl Smith, who now plays with the Jacksonville in the NFL, returned to Atlanta Thursday night as his Jaguars squared off with the Atlanta Falcons.

Not a happy night for Smith as the Falcons administered a 44-14 drubbing to the lowly Jaguars at the Georgia Dome.

“It wasn’t the feeling I wanted to feel at the end,” Smith said.  “Everybody wanted to come up here and get a win and make it two in a row but the Falcons jumped out on us today and never really looked back.”

Smith went on to talk about his Georgia Tech memories, his thoughts on this year’s Georgia Tech team, playing against the triple option offense and the Jackets’ Sun Bowl date with Utah.

Lanier County’s Junior Gnonkonde committed to Georgia Tech last February as a 6’4” 225 pound outside linebacker.

He’s now 6’5”, playing center on Lanier County’s basketball team and says he has good ups and can jam two-handed.

When asked if his blossoming basketball skills and increased height could mean Junior may bypass Paul Johnson’s football team and report to Georgia Tech head basketball coach Brian Gregory, with a chuckle Junior set the reporter straight but added a caveat.

“No sir, I’m going to stick with football,” he said.  “But I may try track, I don’t know I’m not sure yet.”

Junior displays his athletic versatility in track by  running the 4x400, 4x100 and the 400 plus he throws the shot.

Calvin Days Talks Son Jabari Hunt-Days

Jabari Hunt-Days is finishing off his redshirt freshman season and will most likely be competing for playing time at the linebacker position next season.

While almost all players would prefer to compete than sit, Jabari’s father Calvin Days views the redshirt as being very beneficial.

“I’m personally an advocate of the redshirt.  People underestimate the complexities of the college game, particularly the defensive piece,” Calvin said

Calvin feels that the redshirt will give Jabari the opportunity to be 100% all four years as opposed to only 70% his first year.

Hunt-Days, who has been working hard in the weight room, now stands 6’4” and weighs 245 pounds.

Tyler Stargel Interview - Georgia Tech Recruit

Tyler Stargel is a 6’3” 250 pound linebacker who committed to Georgia Tech this past June.

Along with several other recruits Stargel had his official visit this past weekend and he came away very impressed.

“It was a perfect weekend for a visit.  The weather was great and we had a lot of fun,” the Gulf Shores, Alabama product said.

Stargell experienced the Georgia Tech football program from the inside, found it very enlightening and the visit reaffirmed his commitment to Coach Johnson and his staff.

He also got the opportunity to watch his first college football practice.

“We got the chance to watch practice on Friday,” Tyler said.  “I really enjoyed that, I was looking forward to that the whole time ‘cause I really wanted to see what it was like.  I had never seen a college practice before and I wanted to see how things worked.”

D.J. White Interview

Union Grove cornerback D.J. White decided to stay home and commit to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

White had previously committed to USF but decided that Georgia Tech would be a better fit for him.

“It is closer to home so my parents will be able to come up and see me play a little bit easier,” White said.  “It is a little bit more of a stable situation with them being in the ACC and everything.”

White also feels very good about what he has seen at Georgia Tech and has a good comfort level with the head coach.

“Coach Paul Johnson he seems like a pretty straightforward guy,” White said.

According to White he stands 6-0 and weighs 180 pounds and runs a quick 4.43 40-yard dash time.

Mario Butler Interview

Mario Butler is living the good life in Texas as a Dallas Cowboys defensive back.  He’s not on the active roster but has been on the practice squad since the season started in September.

Not bad work if you can find the opportunity – NFL practice squad players make $5,700 per week.  But the handsome paychecks are not the only life changes that Butler has experienced.

“It’s kinda surreal, especially in the beginning,” Mario said.  “Every day you’re in the locker room with all these guys you've seen on TV, Terence Newman, DeMarcus Ware, Michael Jenkins and all these guys and whoever would’ve thought?”

Wasn’t all that long ago that Mario Butler was playing football at Georgia Tech and living the college life.  He reflected back on this time last year.

“I remember last year watching the game when I was in college, the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers and now this time I’m playing for the Cowboys so it is kind of a surreal feeling that all the hard work does pay off.”
